As we venture into another new and exciting school year, I wanted to share a speech I delivered to all the new teachers within my school district. I felt so incredibly honored to be able to share some anecdotes and advice at TOCLI, our school system’s wonderful Teacher Orientation & Continuous Learning Institute.
It wasn’t all that long ago when I began my journey in the world of education, and getting to speak to our district’s wide-eyed, eager educators brought back quite a few memories from my first year…the good, the bad, and the just plain embarrassing! Nevertheless, I definitely learned A LOT that year and wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Truthfully, does anyone ever really master teaching? I don’t think so. It’s just one of those incredible professions that is constantly evolving. Just when I feel comfortable, something changes. And while that is one of the most challenging things about the profession, it is also one of the big things that keeps me coming back. It keeps me on my toes. It keeps me intrigued. There is always more I can be doing or trying to help my students reach their maximum potential.
As educators, we need to, in a way, always keep a ‘new teacher’ mentality by being open to both learning and growth.
So, as we enter this next adventure, keep pushing yourself to be better and I will surely do the same!
Best of luck, and giddy up! 🙂
